Why jump into a big pile of leaves when you can jump into this week’s newly released albums? Sufjan Stevens returns to his orchestral folk roots on his pensive and stirring 10th solo album, Javelin. West Coast singer-songwriter Tré Burt’s third album, Traffic Fiction, is brimming with rich production flourishes and captivating lyrical stories. Peerless harpist Mary Lattimore is joined by members of The Cure and Slowdive on Goodbye, Hotel Arkada, a set of six compositions inspired by the artist’s acceptance of inevitable change.
For his second solo album, Parquet Courts co-leader A. Savage worked again with Sympathy for Life producer John Parish to give Several Songs About Fire a raw yet vivid sonic palette. After co-writing material on all three of Harry Styles’ blockbusters, Mitch Rowland steps into the spotlight on his own solo debut, Come June. This week’s list of releases is heavy on reissues, from Tom Waits to Meat Puppets, but for fans of Elliott Smith there’s no more essential archive than The Music of Heatmiser, which boasts a long overdue repress of the Portland group’s rare handmade demo.
