As end-of-year lists and plans begin to loom on the horizon, keep in mind that there are still many new releases arriving in the home stretch of 2023. Recorded at London’s Royal Albert Hall, Cat Power Sings Dylan sees Chan Marshall staging a song-for-song love letter to the songwriter’s much-bootlegged (and regrettably mis-titled) May ’66 set at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall. Sturdy country guitarist Chris Stapleton co-writes with Dan Wilson and Dave Cobb on his fifth solo LP, HIGHER. Following the first installment of a conceptual EP series, Pure Bathing Culture’s Chalice is abundant with the Portland duo’s signature crystalline dream pop.
Inspired by a trip to Norway, Zach Condon folds Scandinavian folk traditions into his globetrotting indie pop on Beirut’s sixth album, Hadsel. Recorded live in-studio with a full band, Be Good the Crazy Boys is the Talking Heads- and Grace Jones-inspired third album from Here We Go Magic’s Luke Temple as Art Feynman. Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa produced the soundtrack to the first season of The Buccaneers; the Edith Wharton adaptation is accompanied by new tracks from Sharon Van Etten, Lucius, Miya Folick, and more.
