Joining us in the studio for this Indie Rock Hit Parade session is a young group whose debut album is one of this year’s finest. Hailing from Leeds, keyboardist Lily Fontaine, guitarist Lewis Whiting, bassist Nicholas Eden, and drummer Douglas Frost formed English Teacher in 2020. From the jump, early songs like “The World’s Biggest Paving Slab” and “R&B” showcased the group’s razor-sharp rhythms and heartbreakingly witty lyrics. Through each song on their 2022 EP Polyawkward and this year’s full-length debut, This Could Be Texas, English Teacher navigate complex structures that carom from delicate balladry to strutting post-punk fury (often within the same track). While on a North American headlining tour, English Teacher stopped by our studios to run through a set of new songs.

From the whirlwind “Nearly Daffodils” to the slow-building song that gives their album its title, English Teacher’s session is as captivating a performance as they come.
