Just when you thought it was safe to finalize your year-in-review playlist, this week’s (and next week’s) slate of new albums is sure to give you a last-minute change of mind. With new translations by filmmaker Alan Del Rio Ortiz, St. Vincent delivers a full Spanish-language reimagining of All Born Screaming as Todos Nacen Gritando. Nearly every pianist carefully studies the works of Beethoven, but Jon Batiste isn’t just any pianist; the decorated songwriter folds modern rhythms into a mix of timeless compositions on Beethoven Blues (Batiste Piano Series, Vol. 1). Dolly Parton teamed with multiple generations of her musical family, including archival recordings of relatives long since passed, for Smoky Mountain DNA: Family, Faith & Fables.
It’s been almost a decade since Dwight Yoakam’s last album, but the country-rock legend remains rough and ready on his 21st original studio LP, Brighter Days. Vienna-based Sofie Royer shifts gears from fizzy art-pop to club-ready anthems that double as a parable for contemporary femininity on Young-Girl Forever. Led by Joseph Arthur and Black Crowes’ Rich Robinson (and featuring members of R.E.M. and Screaming Trees), Silverlites deliver the kind of melodic pop that only comes from combined decades of craft.
Listen for spotlights on new records like these (and more) every week on the XPN Morning Show and Indie Rock Hit Parade.
