Who They Are:
The origins of Reyna Tropical stretch back to when Fabiola Reyna and Sumohair first met at the Bonnaroo festival while both participating in the Red Bull Music Academy’s Bass Camp. The pair quickly bonded over their shared musical ambitions and personal backgrounds; both women were born in Mexico but grew up in America. The duo has previously released two EPs blending the rhythms of reggaeton with a distinct and danceable guitar-centered sound. In March, they will release their debut album, Malegria, weaving together “the ancestral and physical worlds” and borrowing a title from a 1998 Manu Chao song, The album was developed during a tropical journey that brought the artists to Colombia, Puerto Rico, and beyond. Reyna is also creator and CEO of She Shreds Magazine – the only print publication centered on female bassists and guitarists in the world.
