SNACKTIME’s Sam Gellerstein is loving live recordings, rap rock, soul for Ears We Trust
Sam Gellerstein of Philly funk outfit SNACKTIME jumped in on this week’s Ears We Trust. He’s shouting out Genesis, Dijon, and a collab between rapper Denzel Curry and hardcore band Knocked Loose.

You’ve seen Sam Gellerstein getting groovy on bass and sousaphone with Philly’s beloved funk-soul-jazz-hip-hop fusion band SNACKTIME. But did you know he came up in the Florida punk and hardcore scene before heading north to Philly?
Having such a well-rounded wealth of musical knowledge means Gellerstein has ears we trust.
Check out his what he’s been listening to lately below:
Genesis — “Invisible Touch (Live)”
I was at JINXED in South Philly and happened upon two extremely dope live Genesis shows on VHS. My fiancée installed a small old school TV, and we’ve been throwing these on while I make dinner. I’ve been obsessing over this concert. It just kicks so much ass. The band is on fire. Genesis need some respect on their names for a lot of the new sounds coming out today.
Bon Iver — “HEAVENLY FATHER”
I wasn’t planning on highlighting so many live recordings, but truth be told, I do a lot of listening to live albums. They really inspire me while we’re creating our sets. Bon Iver has been a long time favorite of mine. I saw a video of them doing this song live at Sydney Opera House and was waiting for a version to listen to on streaming. Luckily, with VOLUMES: ONE release it’s also on vinyl.
Dijon — “Yamaha”
Dijon’s sound is my ideal for what I can listen to every day. It’s funky, it’s soulful, it’s raw, and it’s powerful. A daily listen for me at this point. Not to belabor the live recording thing, but this was one of the sickest shows I’ve been to in years. Insanely good band. He really captures the record’s energy with his shows.
Knocked Loose — “Hive Mind” (feat. Denzel Curry)
The ultimate gym track. This is such a sick link up. Bring rap rock back. Shout out Public Enemy and Anthrax “Bring The Noise” from Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2. This Knocked Loose-Denzel Curry pairing reminds me of the shows I would book back in high school when genre wasn’t so important to everyone. I hope for more of this.
